The Jordanian government confirmed on Tuesday its pride in the fraternal relations linking the kingdom with Syria, and its commitment to developing these ties in a manner that serves the interests of the two brotherly countries and ensures coordination in confronting all shared challenges, including the Islamic State (ISIS) group, which poses a common threat to both nations. Government Communications Minister and official government spokesperson Dr. Mohammed al-Momani emphasized the high regard Jordan holds for Syria and its brotherly people, noting that coordination between Jordan and Syria in combating terrorism, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking is institutional and ongoing, having been in place for years. This cooperation stems from a firm conviction in consolidating the security of the two brotherly countries and reflects their joint efforts to entrench security and stability.
The official spokesperson stressed that the airstrikes carried out by the Jordanian Armed Forces yesterday targeted Islamic State positions, following Jordan’s exhaustion of patience with the movements of these terrorist groups and their targeting of national security. He explained that the operations were conducted based on field intelligence to neutralize confirmed threats and terrorist operations against Jordan, adding that initial results of these strikes indicate significant losses within ISIS ranks, estimated at more than 20 fighters, and the destruction of a large weapons depot belonging to the group.
The spokesperson expressed regret over the occurrence of civilian casualties, affirming that Jordan refrained from targeting sites where intelligence indicated the presence of civilians. He confirmed that relevant Jordanian authorities are following up on this matter with their Syrian counterparts. Al-Momani stressed that Jordan always takes all necessary precautions to avoid harming civilians, as it attaches the same importance to the lives of innocent civilians outside its borders as it does to the lives of Jordanians, based on its belief that human life and dignity are indivisible values, regardless of nationality or location.
Al-Momani indicated that Jordan will work with Syria to establish a joint committee to monitor the repercussions of the operation against ISIS and to enhance coordination in combating the terrorist group, thereby ensuring the security of the two countries and their brotherly peoples and protecting civilians. The official government spokesperson affirmed that the security of Jordan and Syria is one, and that combating terrorism—which targeted Jordan in the village of Hamoud in Karak a few days ago—is a shared objective for both countries, which will continue to work on strengthening their deep-rooted fraternal relations.
Concluding his remarks, the Government Communications Minister reaffirmed that no one can doubt Jordan’s commitment to Syria; Jordan has hosted Syrians, stood by their side, and provided them with continuous support. The kingdom seeks to stand by its sister country Syria, support its security, strengthen its internal front and unity, and enhance its presence at all levels. Furthermore, Jordan coordinates with international parties to ensure the integrity of Syrian territory, guarantee its unity and stability, and deter ambitions against it, particularly in southern Syria.
