U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he tried to persuade the American technology company Google to name one of the oceans after him, but the company rejected the proposal. During a speech at a campaign rally in Georgia, Trump explained that he had suggested to representatives of the internet giant that the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean be renamed “Trump Ocean.” He added that the company responded angrily: “We’ve had enough… that’s enough… we won’t do any more,” according to the German News Agency.
Trump had issued an executive order in 2025 changing the name of the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America,” and last August, he renamed Lake Ontario, which lies on the border between the United States and Canada, as “Lake America.” Google adopted both changes on its maps for users in the United States. Trump told his supporters that he had sent Google a map labeled “Trump Ocean,” but company representatives rejected the idea. He claimed he was only joking this time, but added that the idea was not the worst one he had ever come up with.
Trump has long expressed his desire to rename one of the oceans. He has also proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait.”
