Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions and quickly restore calm and stability in the region during a meeting held today, Saturday, with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that the two sides discussed, during the meeting held on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers’ meetings in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, ways to reach an agreement that would help contain the current crisis and prevent the conflict from escalating. The statement added that Abdelatty stressed the necessity of ensuring freedom of international navigation and the regular flow of trade through maritime routes, which would help mitigate the negative repercussions of the crisis on the global economy, particularly given the significant disruptions it has caused in energy and fertilizer supply chains and international trade. The statement further noted that Abdelatty underscored the importance of respecting the security and stability of the Arab Gulf states and all countries in the region, as well as the need to halt all hostile actions targeting Saudi Arabia and to condemn such unjustified attacks.
