Lulwah Al-Ghanim: First Kuwaiti Female Judge to Join International Association of Women Judges

In a step that strengthens the presence of Kuwaiti women in international judicial forums, Judge Lulwah Ibrahim Al-Ghanim, a judge at the Court of Cassation in Kuwait, has joined the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), becoming the first Kuwaiti woman to attain membership since its establishment. This follows a ministerial decree appointing her to the association’s membership for one year, in addition to her regular duties. This membership opens broader avenues for cooperation and the exchange of expertise with female judges from various countries around the world, thereby supporting Kuwait’s judicial presence at both the regional and international levels, and enhancing Kuwaiti women’s participation in discussions and programs related to justice and the rule of law.

Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the United States, the association brings together female judges from different judicial systems worldwide, united by their commitment to achieving justice and consolidating the rule of law. The association works to support the role of women in the judiciary and to promote human rights and judicial independence, through the exchange of expertise, the organization of international conferences and training programs, as well as initiatives that enable female judges to develop their capacities and assume leadership roles.

Among the prominent judicial figures who have previously joined the association is Navi Pillay, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of her efforts to promote peace and international law.
