Portuguese Federation decides to temporarily suspend Ronaldo

The Portuguese Football Federation has temporarily suspended national team captain and Al Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo, following the opening of disciplinary proceedings against him for leaving the national team camp. The 41-year-old Ronaldo departed the Portuguese national team camp ahead of their UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, after a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo accused his coach of failing to honor promises regarding his playing time, particularly after being kept on the bench during the match against Norway.

Ronaldo later apologized to his teammates and fans, acknowledging that he should not have left the camp and calling on the Portuguese Football Federation to sanction his actions. The federation confirmed on Saturday that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Ronaldo, referring the case to its disciplinary investigation committee.

In a statement, the federation said: “Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, pursuant to a decision issued by the Discipline Commission on October 9, 2026.” The federation added that Ronaldo was initially subjected to an automatic precautionary suspension, followed by an additional precautionary suspension, with the case granted expedited status.

No final penalty has been announced yet, and details of the disciplinary proceedings will remain confidential until the investigation concludes.
