Disappointing Opening for Film 'Digger'... Collects Only $20 Million Since Release

The film “Digger” opened to a very weak and disappointing box office, grossing around $20 million worldwide during its opening weekend against a production budget of approximately $150 million, plus roughly $100 million for marketing, with expectations that the producing company could incur losses of up to $150 million, according to The Guardian. The film, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, earned just $8 million at the U.S. box office, while bringing in $12 million from 74 international markets since its release. These disappointing results come despite the film being positioned as a contender in the awards season, particularly given the involvement of a prominent director and a star of Tom Cruise’s stature. The movie faced harsh criticism from critics, while audiences gave it a C+ grade according to CinemaScore, which noted that Cruise’s performance was relatively better rated compared to the rest of the film. Cruise, 64, has maintained his status as a box office draw in recent years thanks to the Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick franchises, while his last major commercial failure was The Mummy in 2017.
