University of Oxford: Number One Globally

The University of Oxford retained its top position in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2027, marking its eleventh consecutive year at the summit and setting a new record. According to the University of Oxford’s website, the university has led the ranking since 2017, the longest period any institution has held first place across the 22 annual editions of the ranking. The 2027 edition included 2,297 universities from 118 countries, an increase of 106 institutions compared to the previous year. The assessment was based on an analysis of approximately 20 million scientific research papers and nearly one million survey responses. University performance was measured using 17 indicators across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) finished second, trailing Oxford by just 0.1 points—the narrowest margin between first and second place in the ranking’s history. Oxford outperformed MIT in research output and co-authored international research, as well as in the ratio of doctoral students to academic staff. MIT achieved better results in the student-to-staff ratio, citation impact, and research strength.

Princeton University and Stanford University tied for third place, followed by the University of Cambridge in fifth, and Harvard University in sixth. The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) ranked seventh, Imperial College London eighth, while the University of California, Berkeley, and Yale University shared ninth place.
