Crown Prince... Diplomacy of experience and opening economic doors
Kuwait’s participation in recent United Nations meetings is not merely a ceremonial presence at an international event, but rather a space where Kuwaiti diplomacy is advancing on multiple tracks, most notably political and economic ones. This landscape highlights the active engagement of His Highness the Amir’s representative, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad, and His Highness the Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, may God protect and support them, at the 81st session of the General Assembly. Their activities encompass a broad series of meetings with international leaders and officials, as well as with executives from major global financial institutions and corporations.
What lends particular significance to this diplomatic presence is that the Crown Prince does not enter the realm of foreign policy solely through his current office, but brings with him decades of experience in diplomatic and governmental service. His career began with his joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1978, progressing through various roles, including service in Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, before he assumed the portfolio of Minister of Foreign Affairs and later became Prime Minister. This background ensures that his presence in New York is an extension of a long career in managing international relations and a deep understanding of the role Kuwait can play in a highly complex regional and international environment. Kuwait remains, and will continue to be, a key player, particularly on files related to peace and regional stability.
Notably, Kuwait’s presence at these meetings extended beyond political issues, with economic and investment matters making a strong showing. This was evident in the Crown Prince’s meetings with representatives of major economic institutions, such as the Chief Executive Officer of BlackRock and the Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs, where numerous investment opportunities in Kuwait were discussed, alongside investments in national energy sectors and the development of leadership and technical skills.
In this context, it is important to emphasize that Kuwait requires not only strong international relations, but also the conversion of these relationships into genuine projects, investments, and partnerships within the Kuwaiti economy. This is the point where diplomacy can transform from a tool for building relationships into a tool for supporting the economy. Kuwait, which has built a notable political and diplomatic standing over decades of external engagement, now has an opportunity to leverage this standing as a bridge toward a more diversified economy. While oil will remain a fundamental component of the economy, diversifying income sources is no longer an economic luxury, but a necessity driven by global transformations.
Therefore, the activity witnessed in New York deserves to be viewed as an indication that Kuwait is expanding both its political and economic partnerships. Kuwaiti diplomacy possesses a long track record, and the Crown Prince’s diplomatic and governmental expertise ensures that his international engagements are grounded in extensive experience. Kuwait has always been distinguished by its presence in international forums and will maintain a prominent position.
