Rescue of large fishing net entangled in coral reefs

The Kuwaiti diving team, affiliated with the Al-Mubarrah Environmental Volunteer Organization, successfully retrieved approximately a quarter of a ton of abandoned fishing nets entangled in coral reefs at the Arwajan marine site, rescuing several marine creatures trapped by the nets. Team leader Waleed Al-Fadl stated, “The operation was conducted at a depth of 12 meters below the sea surface, covering an area of approximately 30 square meters, as part of the team’s ongoing efforts to clean Kuwait’s marine environment, protect coral reefs, and enhance maritime safety.” He explained that abandoned fishing nets, known as “ghost nets,” pose a significant threat to the marine ecosystem, as they can suffocate coral reefs by blocking sunlight, in addition to trapping fish and other marine organisms, leading to their death.
