US and Iran Discuss Interim Agreement to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
Reuters, citing sources close to the negotiations between the United States and Iran, reported that negotiators from both countries are exploring in New York a gradual path out of the conflict, involving Tehran’s reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Washington lifting the economic sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.
Two Iranian sources, two regional officials, and two Western diplomatic sources said the talks are hitting a stubborn impasse, as neither side is willing to be the first to concede its leverage. However, despite its hardline stance, Iran recognizes the economic cost of a prolonged confrontation.
A senior Iranian official stated that the most realistic way to resolve this deadlock is a phased arrangement, in which Iran would allow navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the United States lifting its economic sanctions, with the possibility of Tehran accessing frozen assets.
Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the official added, “One possible way forward is to resolve the crisis in stages, starting with ending the sanctions and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.”
This would require U.S. President Donald Trump’s approval of another temporary solution, following the collapse of a preliminary understanding in July.
Sources said the main challenge facing the negotiators is not merely outlining the broad framework of an agreement, but also ensuring that any concessions are sustainable enough to build confidence on both sides.
A White House official said that while Iran is keen to reach an agreement, President Trump is in control and will make the decision that is best for the United States.
The official added that Trump remains open to dialogue with Iran under the right circumstances, but is not driven by an urgent need to negotiate, noting that the United States is in an extremely strong position thanks to its control over the Strait of Hormuz and the deteriorating state of the Iranian economy.
The official clarified that the crushing sanctions, one of the most successful blockades in history, have paralyzed the Iranian economy and led to the complete bankruptcy of the Islamic Republic.
He pointed out that Trump prefers to let Iran’s inevitable collapse take its course rather than allowing Tehran to engage in manipulation and deception.
