Lisbon: The Happiest Tourist Destination in the World

In a world where travel options are diverse, the ideal tourist destination is no longer measured solely by the beauty of its landmarks or the luxury of its hotels, but also by the happiness, psychological comfort, and experiences it offers visitors that enhance quality of life. By this standard, Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, has ascended to the throne of the world’s happiest tourist destinations, surpassing 46 other cities included in a new global ranking. The “Holiday Happiness Index,” released by the platform “BookRetreats,” revealed that Lisbon topped the list thanks to a combination of natural and health-related attributes that make it a unique destination for those seeking relaxation, rejuvenation, and enjoyment of life.
According to a report published by “Euronews,” the ranking was based on an analysis of five key factors related to well-being, including exposure to sunlight, the ability to engage in physical activity through walking, the availability of green spaces, access to healthy food, and sleep quality. The assessment was prepared under the supervision of clinical psychologist Natalie Dattilo Ryan, a collaborator with Harvard University and a specialist in happiness and holistic well-being, drawing on research indicating the growing importance of mental health and well-being in travelers’ choices.
Lisbon’s top position in the ranking was no coincidence; the city combines its sunny atmosphere, diverse local cuisine, and streets that allow visitors to explore its landmarks on foot, in addition to its parks and green spaces that provide opportunities for relaxation amidst nature. Its coastal setting offers an additional advantage, thanks to its proximity to the beaches of Cascais and Costa da Caparica, where tourists can combine enjoying the sea with outdoor activities in an atmosphere that helps them escape the pressures of daily life.
The many hours of sunshine throughout the year also contribute to the appeal of the Portuguese capital, which offers visitors a variety of experiences that blend urban tourism, nature, and healthy activities.
Helsinki, the capital of Finland, came in second place, benefiting from the presence of nature in the details of daily life, where lush parks intermingle with tree-lined streets, giving the city a calm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
