Tim Cook: Australia's social media restrictions are a global benchmark

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that Apple CEO Tim Cook views the restrictions imposed by the Australian government on social media as “globally pioneering.” Albanese’s remarks came after his meeting with Cook at Apple’s headquarters in California, United States. Speaking on Australian television on Sunday from Apple Park, Albanese said, “Tim Cook gave us a lot of time this morning, and he sees our measures on social media as globally pioneering.” These comments come as Australia continues its efforts to enhance digital safety, having taken a new step this month that gives social media platform users greater control over the content that appears on their feeds. Last December, Australia became the first country to ban social media use for children under the age of 16, a move that prompted other governments to adopt similar measures this year. In the latest European development in this direction, the European Commission has proposed a similar ban for children under the age of 13.
