OpenAI launches specialized legal AI platform
OpenAI has launched a new artificial intelligence platform specialized in the legal sector, named “Astra for Law,” powered by the company’s latest models. The initiative aims to support lawyers, law firms, and legal technology companies in their research, analysis, and legal drafting activities. The new platform combines the “GPT-6 Astra” model with a suite of tools and configurations designed specifically for professional legal work, enabling its use in researching and analyzing legal issues, drafting documents and arguments, and reviewing contracts and transaction terms. It also assists legal technology companies in developing AI-based products and tools.
OpenAI has equipped the platform with a specialized “Legal Search Index” designed to provide direct access to legal sources, rather than relying solely on general internet search results. The index can search over 230 million links to U.S. legal sources, including case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions. The company confirmed that new sources are added to the index daily.
The platform’s case law component relies on the “CourtListener” database, operated by the non-profit “Free Law Project,” which covers more than 99.9% of published U.S. judicial precedents, providing users with a broad range of verifiable sources.
Initially, “Astra for Law” will be available to a select group of U.S. law firms through a dedicated access program, with plans to expand its use later. OpenAI indicated that availability via an Application Programming Interface (API) will follow soon.
The company is also working to expand privacy and governance controls tailored to the legal sector, providing law firms with control mechanisms suited to the nature of confidential business operations and sensitive client data. The platform also allows integration with specialized tools used by law firms and legal technology companies, in line with OpenAI’s approach to making AI part of the existing legal work environment while keeping source verification, result review, and final legal judgment in the hands of professionals.
