British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, an observant Jew, described the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip as “horrific,” stressing that his government needs to take firmer steps than it has so far in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the territory. He stated that he had heard firsthand accounts from people who were inside Gaza, as well as from others still there, and that what he heard reflected the scale of the escalating humanitarian suffering. He added, “Frankly, what is emerging there is horrific,” pointing to reports of medicines being denied to those in need, as well as children dying while waiting for life-saving treatment. He affirmed that these testimonies compel his government to adopt stronger positions, saying, “When you listen to these testimonies, you realize that we, as officials, must act, and act more decisively than we have so far.”
Miliband’s remarks come amid growing pressure on the British government to take additional measures regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with continued warnings about the declining ability of the population to access food, medicine, and healthcare.
Meanwhile, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, described what is happening before the Human Rights Council in Geneva as “the collective killing of Palestinian civilians.” He said he was “appalled by the explicit collective dehumanizing rhetoric and the blatant stripping of humanity from Palestinians by senior Israeli officials,” and described Gaza as a “graveyard.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany would suspend arms sales to Israel, following the Israeli government’s announcement of plans to fully occupy the Gaza Strip.
On another front, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, during a visit to Paris, described what is happening in Gaza as “a deliberate genocide by an extremist right-wing government,” asserting that it is not a war but a genocide committed by a highly aggressive army against women and children.
A report by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry established by the Human Rights Council concluded that Israel is in fact committing genocide, finding that four out of five acts defined in the 1948 Genocide Convention have been fulfilled against Palestinians.
Spain, the most outspoken among European countries, saw its Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez become one of the most explicit European leaders in repeatedly using the term “genocide.” A year ago, he announced a comprehensive package of measures against Israel, including a complete arms embargo, banning ships carrying fuel for the Israeli military from docking in Spanish ports, and prohibiting aircraft transporting defense equipment from using Spanish airspace. He said, “There is a difference between defending your country and bombing hospitals or starving innocent children… This is not self-defense, but the genocide of a defenseless people.” He added that Spain “lacks the means” to stop the Israeli campaign because it “does not possess nuclear bombs, aircraft carriers, or vast oil reserves.” This remark sparked intense anger from Netanyahu, who accused Spain of calling for the “genocide of the only Jewish state in the world,” prompting the Spanish Foreign Ministry to describe the accusation as “false and defamatory.”
The European Union called for the activation of the “Anti-Coercion Instrument” to protect the International Criminal Court and the United Nations from political pressure, stating, “We will not turn a blind eye, and the European Union cannot remain a bystander to this persecution.”
Spain was among the first European countries to officially recognize the State of Palestine, along with Ireland and Norway. These positions and significant shifts would not have been “even” imaginable or audible before the October 2023 attacks. Freedom is not always achieved through kind words and peace, especially when the other party is the most dangerous and prone to using torture, oppression, and even genocide.
