While the memoirs of Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, have sparked a major uproar in Britain, King Charles III did not delay his response to Spencer’s remarks, which came swiftly. In an unusual move within the British royal family, King Charles III responded to the criticisms leveled by his late first wife, Princess Diana’s, brother. A spokesperson for the King stated that “grief can affect the mind, memory, and the ability to judge matters.” The allegations in Spencer’s forthcoming memoir concern the current King’s behavior in the days following Princess Diana’s death in 1997. Princess Diana died at the age of 36 when the car she was sharing with her companion, Dodi Fayed, crashed in Paris while she was fleeing from paparazzi pursuing her on motorcycles.

In the anticipated memoirs, Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, claims that Prince Charles told him at the time, “Relax, we’ll forget her soon,” according to a report published by the Daily Mail, which will begin serializing the book. The report noted that these comments were made during a heated phone call between Spencer and King Charles regarding whether Diana and Charles’s sons, Princes William and Harry, should participate in her funeral, a matter Spencer had objected to.

In response to questions about the report, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty the King recognizes that the loss of a sibling can cloud the mind, affect judgment, and color memory in ways that others may not appreciate, even many years after such a loss.”

Prior to the memoirs’ publication, Charles Spencer stated, “The aim is to clarify the facts about Diana from her brother’s perspective. I want to speak on her behalf and do so in a positive and candid manner.”
