Traffic congestion: A nightmare draining employees' energy

Traffic congestion is no longer merely a daily delay in getting to work; it has become a burden that drains employees’ energy, placing them under pressure that begins the moment they leave home, extends to their workplace, and may even accompany them on their return to their families. As many public and private entities continue to require daily in-person attendance, employees face long lines of vehicles, frequent stops, traffic noise, and anxiety about being late, arriving at their offices already feeling tense and exhausted before they even begin their tasks. Peer-reviewed studies indexed in the U.S. National Library of Medicine indicate that long commutes are associated with elevated stress levels and decreased satisfaction with certain aspects of work and life, as well as a reduction in time available for sleep, rest, and family activities. Research published in specialized scientific journals has also shown that long, tiring commutes can contribute to impaired concentration and performance in certain tasks, particularly when the duration of the trip is difficult to predict. This pressure can affect employees’ psychological well-being and their interactions with colleagues, making them more sensitive to everyday work stresses. Charles Caldwood, a professor of psychology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, notes that the effects of commuting can extend across the road, the workplace, and the home. The repercussions are not limited to the psychological domain: the World Health Organization warns that transportation systems can increase exposure to traffic noise and air pollution, while patterns heavily reliant on private vehicles can limit opportunities for physical activity. The time wasted behind the wheel represents an additional burden, often cutting into time for sleep, rest, family, exercise, and hobbies, thereby amplifying the impact of congestion on health, productivity, and social relationships. Carmen Benavides, a professor of psychology at Münster University, argues that commuting stress is not solely a function of trip length, but also of the ability to predict its duration and control it, as traffic jams and unexpected delays heighten stress levels. Benavides calls for greater flexibility in work hours and locations, which would help employees avoid peak hours and take advantage of remote work when the nature of their jobs permits.
