Guardian documentary exposes occupation crimes in Gaza: mass killings by artificial intelligence
A documentary produced by the British newspaper The Guardian, drawing on testimonies from several soldiers of the Israeli occupation army, has revealed secret systems and methods used by the Israeli military in operations targeting and killing large numbers of civilians during the war on the Gaza Strip. According to testimonies from Israeli soldiers who participated in remote surveillance and targeting operations, the Israeli military employed artificial intelligence-based systems to identify large numbers of individuals suspected of belonging to Hamas, including low-ranking members. After identifying the targets, the Israeli military bombed their homes at night, despite being aware that such strikes could also result in the deaths of their family members, according to the soldiers’ testimonies featured in the film.
Israeli soldiers in the documentary “NAZA” revealed that the Israeli military used technological means to hack into the phones of targeted individuals and determine their locations. They noted that the Israeli military secretly intercepted conversations between some targets and their wives and children shortly before bombing their homes and killing the families inside. The documentary also relayed eyewitness accounts of the destruction of residential neighborhoods, despite Israeli military estimates that about a quarter of their residents were still sheltering inside their homes. The documentary also addressed testimonies regarding the systematic burning of civilian homes, as well as the killing of civilians at sites designated for the distribution of food aid.
The film included interviews with Israeli soldiers who stated they worked in a secret intelligence unit directly subordinate to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. One soldier featured in the documentary said one of the unit’s tasks was “to thwart the peace process.”
For his part, Paul Lewis, head of investigations at The Guardian and executive producer of the film, said the documentary represents the culmination of years of work to uncover and verify the systems used by Israel’s military intelligence in Gaza. The revelation of these testimonies comes amid the ongoing widespread humanitarian consequences of the war that began in October 2023. According to the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health, the cumulative toll of casualties since October 2023 has reached approximately 73,670 martyrs, in addition to 174,682 injured. Many victims remain under the rubble and on the roads, as it remains difficult for ambulance and civil defense teams to reach them, according to the ministry.
In addition to human losses, civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip has suffered widespread destruction, with the United Nations estimating the cost of rebuilding the strip at around $70 billion.
