A national initiative and immediate response enhance Kuwait's standing

Kuwaiti diplomacy has been distinguished throughout its history as a high standard of balanced political engagement, securing a prestigious position at the Gulf, Arab, and international levels. This distinction was not a product of chance, but rather the result of a deep harmony and mutual understanding among its diplomats, whether ministers of foreign affairs or ambassadors representing the State of Kuwait across various countries. They shared a single vision and a noble goal: to enhance Kuwait’s standing and consolidate its diplomatic presence with honor.

Against this backdrop of beautiful consensus in vision and objectives, national initiatives and ideas were never met with hesitation or neglect. Instead, they found attentive ears and profound interest, followed by serious action toward implementation. Proposals were put forward with sincere patriotism and received with open minds and decisive will, allowing them to quickly transition into reality. This scene reflects the maturity of Kuwaiti diplomatic experience and the dedication of its sons to serving their homeland with utmost sincerity and devotion.

Among the most prominent examples embodying this noble patriotic spirit is the encounter between His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him (who was then Minister of Foreign Affairs), and His Excellency Ambassador Saud Mohammed Al-Asimi, may God protect him (then Kuwait’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). This incident is recounted by the esteemed Mr. Faisal Abdulaziz Al-Zamil, who stated:

“Kuwait had long been accustomed to hosting Arab and foreign heads of state, ministers, and other official delegations in hotels. There was no specific or dedicated venue to receive, host, or hold meetings for these official delegations. During one of the meetings of Arab Foreign Ministers held in the 1980s in the fraternal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, after the official sessions concluded, His Excellency Ambassador Saud Mohammed Al-Asimi requested that His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him, spare some of his time for a quick tour of the Conference Palace in the city of Taif. This magnificent edifice, built by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was designed to receive official delegations, host meetings, and provide comprehensive accommodation for diplomatic guests in an organized and highly prepared environment.

His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him, welcomed this invitation and allocated two hours for this inspection tour. He reviewed the facilities of the ‘Taif Palace,’ including its halls and equipment, which reflected an advanced level in managing diplomatic work and receiving delegations. During this tour, Ambassador Al-Asimi presented His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him, with an important national idea. The essence of the proposal was that Kuwait, given its high diplomatic standing, deserved to have a similar edifice dedicated to receiving official delegations, organizing conferences and meetings, and facilitating the accommodation and movement of delegations in a safe, easy, and comfortable manner. Such a venue would reflect Kuwait’s civilized status before the world and align with the scale of its diplomatic representation. Accordingly, Ambassador Al-Asimi proposed to His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad, may God have mercy on him, allocating sufficient space within Kuwait to establish such a national and civilized edifice.

This proposal was not merely a passing thought; it stemmed from a sincere patriotic sentiment and a genuine desire to enhance Kuwait’s standing in the eyes of Ambassador Al-Asimi. In response, the wisdom of His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him, was evident in his absolutely positive handling of this good initiative and national proposal. He did not merely listen; he welcomed and endorsed the idea, showing great interest in it, so that it entered the implementation phase immediately upon his return to his beloved homeland, Kuwait.

Indeed, efforts were made to realize this vision on the ground. An appropriate site was selected in the Bayan area to construct ‘Bayan Palace,’ which later became one of the most prominent diplomatic venues in Kuwait. It serves as a key location for receiving high-level delegations, various guests, and hosting conferences and official meetings, reflecting the high diplomatic status enjoyed by Kuwait regionally, Arab-wise, and internationally.

Thus, the features of the authentic Kuwaiti patriotic spirit are beautifully revealed through this exemplary model of cooperation among the sons of the nation in the diplomatic field. The patriotic initiative was timely, as the need for such an edifice and the implementation of this proposal was urgent and essential. It represented a courageous initiative and a strong sense of responsibility on the part of His Excellency Ambassador Saud Mohammed Al-Asimi, may God protect him. Conversely, the dignified, positive interaction and rapid endorsement by His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him, were truly fitting. He was indeed a name that matched his title, known as the ‘Sheikh of Arab and World Diplomats’ and the ‘Dean of Arab and Kuwaiti Diplomacy.’ This initiative thus saw the light of day, transforming from a mere proposal into a beautiful edifice and a tangible national achievement.

It is the spirit of sincere patriotism, built on loyalty, complementarity, and joint effort—a spirit that created achievements and contributed to consolidating Kuwait’s standing among nations. It is the same spirit that distinguished Kuwaitis in the past and present, and will remain, God willing, a beacon by which God guides future generations to follow its path and emulate its example, thereby achieving the elevation, progress, and prosperity of the country.
