Strait of Hormuz blockade backfires on Iran

Economic pressure on Iran is mounting amid the ongoing naval blockade and unrest in the Strait of Hormuz region, as Tehran emerges as one of the primary casualties of the crisis. Iran’s ability to export oil has declined, while large volumes of crude produced by other regional countries continue to reach global markets. The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran has been unable to export oil since July, exacerbating pressures on an economy heavily reliant on oil revenues to generate income and foreign currency, thereby worsening the country’s economic situation.

These developments come as Tehran faces increasing pressure due to the persistent naval blockade. The disruption of Iranian oil exports deals a direct blow to a key source of revenue, particularly if the crisis persists for a longer period. Meanwhile, significant quantities of oil from regional countries have managed to reach global markets despite Iranian attacks and security disruptions in the sea lanes. This has limited Tehran’s ability to use energy supply disruptions as leverage against the global economy.

The continued flow of crude from the region has helped avoid a sharp global supply shortage and prevented a larger spike in oil prices, despite concerns raised by developments in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical strategic energy export routes. Consequently, the economic repercussions of the crisis are falling more heavily on Iran itself, as global markets have maintained a degree of supply continuity, reducing the impact Tehran had hoped to achieve through its escalation in the region.

As Iranian oil exports remain disrupted while regional crude continues to flow, the risks facing the Iranian economy are growing, both in terms of declining revenues and foreign currency shortages. The Strait of Hormuz crisis is thus gradually transforming into an increasing economic burden for Tehran.
