Child Ayyoub's plight holds Algerians' breaths

The plight of 10-year-old Ayoub has held the breath of Algerians, amid widespread anticipation for the outcome of rescue efforts after he fell into a narrow, dry well in the El Bayadh province. The tragic incident has turned into a race against time, with the hopes of his family and citizens resting on the rescue teams’ ability to reach him and bring him out safely. As the operation enters its third day, rescue efforts continue amid intense public scrutiny and calls for the tragedy to end with the child’s safe rescue and return to his family.

The story began when Ayoub left his house carrying his brother’s lunch, as the latter was tending to sheep, before starting his journey home. While passing over a well covered by a wooden plank, the cover suddenly collapsed under his feet, causing the boy to fall into the depths and disappear from view. After his disappearance, his family began searching for him, with his father repeatedly calling his name, until they heard their son crying and pleading for help from the bottom of the well, turning ordinary moments into a painful human tragedy.

Rescue teams revealed that the well was dug using traditional methods and reaches a depth of approximately 80 meters, with a diameter not exceeding 40 centimeters. It is not lined with a casing pipe and is partially filled with soil up to a depth of about 30 meters. These conditions, combined with the narrow opening and fragile soil, made direct descent to rescue the child extremely dangerous after he fell in when the wooden cover he was walking over broke.

With direct descent ruled out, authorities adopted an alternative plan involving digging a deep trench parallel to the well to reach the child’s level, before carefully attempting to breach the well wall horizontally by hand to avoid soil collapse. Rescue teams have deployed machinery and equipment, alongside medical teams and ambulances. Authorities confirmed that the operation is ongoing without interruption, with precise measures in place to ensure the safety of both the child and the rescue teams.

As hours of anticipation continue, Ayoub’s plight has brought to the minds of Algerians and Arabs the story of Moroccan child Ryan, whose fall into a narrow well in 2022 shocked the world. Today, Ayoub’s rescue operation has become a humanitarian case followed by thousands moment by moment, with great hope that this tragedy will have a different ending.
