Modric to Tottenham deal... Could it become the story of the season?

Ukrainian midfielder Mykhailo Mudryk is defying the odds following his loan move to English club Tottenham Hotspur from Chelsea for a single season, marking a new return to the pitch after nearly two years away due to a doping ban. In 2024, it was confirmed that he had taken banned substances after playing for his national team, resulting in a four-year suspension. However, the case was resolved after adjustments by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to its regulations regarding certain substances and their permitted thresholds in athlete tests. Consequently, Mudryk was reinstated to play by WADA’s immediate decision last June.

Mudryk joined Chelsea from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in a record deal valued at approximately €100 million, a transfer marked by fierce competition between London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal. The player set a record for sprint speed during his debut for Chelsea against Liverpool in the English Premier League, clocking a speed of 36 km/h. This feat highlighted his renowned exceptional ball control and pace. However, he failed to maintain the level expected by fans and supporters of the Blues, and his return as a player has not added significant value or made a decisive impact.

After his doping case, he was completely sidelined from football before rejoining Chelsea, whose technical management allowed him to move on loan to neighbors Tottenham Hotspur. His move to the Spurs was not coincidental but appears to have been a joint decision between the Italian manager Ange Postecoglou and the player, given their strong relationship dating back to when Postecoglou coached him at Shakhtar. Mudryk previously described Postecoglou as his “father in football.” The duo now faces a new challenge, with Mudryk taking on a personal race against time to rediscover himself at age 25 alongside Tottenham and Postecoglou. Will he succeed in this test, or will Tottenham prove to be another failure in his career in English football?
