U.S. authorities deported British political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos to the United Kingdom after he was detained for overstaying his permitted period of stay and for failing to appear at a hearing before an immigration court. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said that officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Yiannopoulos, 41, at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on August 27, before deporting him to Britain the following day. According to the department, Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally through New York in May 2019 but remained in the country after his authorized stay expired. It added that he failed to attend an immigration court hearing, which led to a final order of deportation on July 22. Authorities did not disclose the type of visa Yiannopoulos used to enter the United States in 2019, nor the date his legal stay expired. Neither he nor his representatives issued a statement clarifying the reasons for his absence from the immigration hearing.

Yiannopoulos was born in Britain in 1984 and began his career in journalism focused on technology and digital culture before moving to the United States, where he gained prominence as a controversial political commentator. His broader presence in American politics began through the right-wing website Breitbart News, where he worked between 2014 and 2017, serving as editor of the technology section. Yiannopoulos became known for his confrontational political rhetoric and sharp criticisms of feminism, Islam, and immigration, while presenting himself as a defender of free speech and an opponent of what he described as political correctness. He also organized speaking tours at several U.S. universities, which were met with widespread protests and some events were canceled due to security concerns.

In 2016, the platform Twitter (now X) banned his account after he was accused of participating in a harassment campaign targeting American actress Leslie Jones. Yiannopoulos was among the most prominent supporters of Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign and gained significant traction within the alt-right, a movement associated with hardline nationalist rhetoric and anti-immigration and anti-multiculturalism stances. Yiannopoulos’s positions were not limited to attacking immigrants; he was also known for his anti-Islam and anti-Muslim rhetoric.
