Reem Qasim - Fruit is renowned for its unparalleled natural health benefits and is often considered an ideal snack, recommended for unlimited consumption. However, nutritionist Dr. Laurence Plumey offers a different, more precise perspective, strongly advising against eating it as a snack throughout the day due to its high sugar content. According to a report published by the French newspaper Le Figaro, the expert points out that “fruit provides us with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, and is undoubtedly very beneficial to our health. However, it is also rich in sugar, and the claim that natural fruit sugar is healthier has no scientific basis.” She adds, “The body makes no distinction whatsoever between the glucose and fructose found in fruit and those found in sucrose, sugary drinks, or the sugar we add to yogurt or coffee.” She clarifies, “For the body, it is simply glucose and fructose; therefore, the source of the sugar is not of great importance. What matters is the total amount that ultimately enters the body.” Sugar consumption rises rapidly when fruit is eaten in excess. According to the expert, fruit contains an average of about 10% sugars, including glucose and fructose. This means that consuming one kilogram of fruit daily provides approximately 100 grams of sugar. Since a sugar cube weighs about 5 grams, this amount is equivalent to nearly 20 sugar cubes. From this perspective, the idea of replacing chocolate biscuits with unlimited quantities of fruit deserves reconsideration, despite fruit’s nutritional benefits. ◄ Three pieces of fruit daily... no more The most important question remains: How many pieces of fruit should be consumed daily? The nutritionist clarifies that three pieces a day are more than sufficient, allowing one to benefit from the vitamins and antioxidants in fruit without overconsuming sugars.
