Repair and Replacement of Artificial Hip Joint Using 3D Printing

In a new medical achievement reflecting the rapid advancement in orthopedic and joint surgeries in the country, and highlighting the high competence and advanced expertise of national medical staff in utilizing the latest technologies and surgical planning, the Ministry of Health announced that a medical team at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital successfully performed a unique and complex procedure to reconstruct and replace a hip joint using 3D printing technology.
The Ministry of Health stated in a press release yesterday (Tuesday) that the surgery, led by Dr. Hashem Al-Ali, Head of the Orthopedic Surgery Department, marks the first of its kind at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital to employ this technology. It clarified that the 48-year-old patient had suffered from a previous hip joint failure, complications resulting from metal deposition, and significant bone loss in the pelvis, necessitating advanced surgical planning tailored to the nature and complexity of his condition.
The medical team utilized computed tomography scans and 3D printing technology to produce a model identical to the patient’s pelvis prior to the surgery, enabling precise study of bone loss areas and osseous defects, and determining the most appropriate surgical approach before the actual intervention. Based on this preoperative planning, the team performed an advanced reconstructive procedure that included bone grafting and the use of techniques aimed at achieving the necessary stability for the joint and supporting long-term bone integration.
