Watermelon: Important Health Benefits Beyond Hydration

Dr. Wala’a Hafiz – On hot summer days, watermelon is an ideal choice for refreshment and rehydration, thanks to its high water and natural sugar content. Its benefits extend beyond combating hot weather; recent research points to its potential role in supporting cardiovascular health and improving dietary quality. Dr. Linia Patel, a nutritionist and women’s health expert and author of “Life After Weight-Loss Drugs,” notes that it is encouraging to see research focusing on the benefits of simple, accessible foods like watermelon rather than concentrating on expensive “superfoods.” She highlights that watermelon is widely available, easy to eat, and can be readily incorporated into a daily diet.

According to The Telegraph, Patel, alongside nutritionist Sophie Trutman, outlines the fruit’s key health benefits and the best ways to consume it to maximize its nutritional value.

**Enhances Hydration During Summer Months**

Dehydration is undoubtedly a concern, as rising temperatures cause the body to sweat more to stay cool. This can lead to fatigue, headaches, and kidney problems, underscoring the importance of maintaining adequate fluid intake. Patel emphasizes that watermelon is one of the most accessible hydrating options, containing approximately 90 to 92 percent water.

**Improves Blood Flow**

Citrulline is one of the most common compounds in watermelon, helping to produce nitric oxide. Patel explains that this molecule relaxes and widens blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscles.

**Rich in Antioxidants**

Watermelon is a rich source of lycopene, the pigment responsible for its red color. Lycopene has antioxidant properties and plays an active role in supporting cardiovascular health. A 2024 review published in the journal *Nutrients and Metabolism* described lycopene as having exceptional potential for enhancing overall health. Dr. Patel notes that because lycopene is fat-soluble, consuming watermelon with foods such as feta cheese, olive oil, or nuts can improve its absorption.

**Beneficial for Immunity and Skin Health**

Watermelon contains vitamin C, which supports the immune system, and vitamin A, which promotes skin health, collagen production, and vision. According to one study, vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant, helping protect cells and playing a key role in wound healing. Research suggests that regular consumption may reduce the duration and severity of colds. The National Health Service (NHS) recommends that adults consume 40 mg of vitamin C daily; a 200-gram serving of watermelon provides approximately 15 mg.

**May Support Blood Pressure**

In recent years, electrolyte drinks have gained popularity among athletes and amateur runners. These beverages typically contain potassium, which “supports healthy blood pressure, nerve signal transmission, and muscle function.” Watermelon naturally provides potassium—about 110 mg per 100 grams—while containing only minimal amounts of sodium.
