"The Odyssey": The Highest-Grossing Film in History

The film “The Odyssey,” adapted from Homer’s renowned epic and directed by Christopher Nolan, has set a new record as the highest-grossing film rated for adults in cinema history. The movie surpassed the earnings of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which concluded its theatrical run in 2024 with a global total of $1.338 billion, before overtaking it for the top spot last week. Following last weekend’s screenings, “The Odyssey”’s worldwide gross rose to $1.446 billion, according to data from Box Office Mojo, the specialized box office statistics website. The film chronicles the journey of the Greek hero Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, and the challenges he faced over the years on his way back to his homeland of Ithaca after his victory in the Trojan War. The film debuted in the United States and Canada with opening weekend earnings of $123.5 million, before its domestic total climbed to $539 million since its theatrical release on July 17. According to estimates, the film’s production budget was approximately $250 million, in addition to nearly $125 million allocated for its marketing campaign.
