What is the story of the 'most evil mother' who shook Britain?

Details of the case of British citizen Lisa Hayden-Johnson, which shocked public opinion, have emerged after years. For years, she claimed that her son, Matthew, suffered from serious illnesses, including cerebral palsy, diabetes, and cystic fibrosis, despite being in much better health than his mother portrayed. His story became one of the most famous cases of child abuse in the UK involving the fabrication of illness. Lisa convinced doctors and charitable organizations that her son suffered from multiple health problems, presenting herself as a mother fighting for a sick child. She exploited this narrative to obtain benefits, donations, and assistance, while Matthew underwent treatments and tests he did not need.

Over approximately seven years, Matthew underwent more than 325 medical procedures and interventions, including examinations and procedures under anesthesia and unnecessary surgeries. He was made to use a wheelchair, received nutrition via a tube, and was treated as a child with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Lisa managed to cement her narrative with doctors, so Matthew was cared for on the basis of having cerebral palsy, diabetes, and other conditions. She continuously added new symptoms and allergies, including an alleged sensitivity to sunlight and eating difficulties.

One of the most prominent methods of deception revealed by the case was that Lisa added glucose to her son’s urine samples to deceive doctors into believing test results confirmed his diabetes, which helped her sustain her false medical narrative for a long period. Lisa exploited her son’s alleged condition to obtain approximately £130,000 in benefits and allowances, in addition to other donations and assistance. As Matthew’s story spread, the family received widespread media and charitable attention. Lisa became a figure of public sympathy, while Matthew was honored with a Children of Courage award and met then-Prime Minister Tony Blair. To the public, she appeared to be a self-sacrificing mother dedicating her life to caring for a sick child, before the truth was revealed.

The deception was uncovered in 2009. Lisa pleaded guilty to charges related to child cruelty and perverting the course of justice. In January 2010, she was sentenced to three years and three months in prison. The case became a prominent example of child abuse through the fabrication or induction of illness.

The case resurfaced recently with the documentary “Love You to Death,” featuring Matthew and his sister Laura, along with a new interview with their mother. The series revealed details about the years the child spent under the guise of continuous illness. Laura recounted that Matthew appeared in a wheelchair before doctors, but she saw him at home playing and moving normally, which later made her realize the vast discrepancy between the image their mother presented of her brother and the reality. Matthew, now an adult, said his mother still refuses to admit she harmed her children, insisting she acted in their best interests. Despite speaking of forgiveness, he believes her current stance makes rebuilding their relationship difficult.
