Wall Street: Trump seeks to persuade Kim to abandon his country's nuclear program

U.S. President Donald Trump said that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un possesses 57 “very powerful” nuclear weapons, adding, “That should never have been allowed.” In this context, The Wall Street Journal quoted U.S. officials as saying that Trump is seeking to arrange a meeting with Kim as soon as possible this autumn, with the aim of reviving diplomatic efforts to persuade Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons program. According to the officials, Trump discussed the possibility of holding a direct meeting with Kim during his anticipated visit to Asia in November, coinciding with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China. The newspaper noted that formal arrangements for the meeting have not yet begun, and that Trump’s desire to hold the meeting reflects his pursuit of a prominent achievement in foreign policy.
