"Health Ministry": Maximum limit for liposuction is 8% of body weight

In a health decision aimed at ensuring patient safety and protecting them from serious complications, Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadi issued a decision to tighten the regulations governing cosmetic procedures, including amendments to the requirements for performing such procedures in both the public and private sectors. According to Decision No. 232 of 2026, published by the official newspaper “Kuwait Today” in its Sunday edition, the decision prohibits performing purely cosmetic surgeries on patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeding 35. Regarding liposuction procedures, Dr. Al-Awadi’s decision set a maximum limit of 8% of body weight or 5 liters per session, whichever is lower. The decision also mandated a psychological report from a registered psychiatrist prior to performing certain cosmetic procedures on patients diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder, schizophrenia, severe depression, eating disorders, or borderline personality disorder—a new and notable requirement designed to safeguard patients.
