The history of peoples is filled with a vast number of myths, which are considered part of the collective memory. In Kuwait, due to the state’s relative youth, our myths are still in their infancy. These include those associated with the “Maqam Al-Khader” in Falika, the tale of the chained sheep, the stubborn donkey, and the Tanatal, stories with which our parents used to frighten us, among other folkloric narratives. These are likely to vanish in the face of the onslaught of Batman and electronic games on phones and iPads.

Similarly, the “Sirat Al-Zir Salim” was renowned in Yemen, while in Egypt, tales of Abu Zayd Al-Hilali, the Hilalian Epic, Al-Nadaha, our mother Al-Ghulah, and Aboujahl Maslokhah were widely known. Britain’s history, which once ruled three-quarters of the land and all the seas, is also burdened with a large number of myths and folk tales. These include the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Robin Hood, and King Canute, who ordered the tide to stop. Almost all of these blend reality with fiction, often obscuring actual historical facts and causing confusion.

Among the most exciting and widespread British myths, particularly on social media and for well-known reasons, is the legend of “Lady Godiva,” which represents the pinnacle of noble sacrifice and peaceful resistance. For centuries, this tale has captivated the public imagination, especially that of men. It is a story that mixes historical facts with creative embellishments.

According to the legend, Lady Godiva was distressed by the exorbitant taxes imposed by her husband, the ruler, on the residents of Coventry in the 11th century. Coventry later became the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of England. Her husband eventually yielded to her pleas, on the condition that she ride through the streets of Coventry completely naked on horseback. Godiva accepted the challenge. Driven by her intelligence, she issued a decree ordering all citizens to remain in their homes at a specific time and close their windows on that day. She then mounted her horse, naked except for her famous long hair, which covered her body, and began to ride through the city in complete silence.

Her husband was impressed by her intelligence, courage, and loyalty to her people, and he fulfilled his promise by abolishing the heavy taxes. This legend later gave rise to other characters that remain etched in memory to this day, such as “Tom the Peeping Tom,” a tailor who, unlike the townspeople, could not resist looking at the beautiful Lady Godiva as she rode naked. His transgression resulted in his blindness.

There is no historical record to confirm the accuracy of this narrative, despite the historical validity of the figures involved. The first written account of Lady Godiva appearing completely naked appeared in the records of Roger of Wendover, a monk at St. Albans Abbey, who lived hundreds of years after Godiva. Nevertheless, Coventry still celebrates its association with Lady Godiva through statues, festivals, and annual parades, showcasing its civic pride in a woman who appears to have been a prominent historical figure. Regardless of whether she undertook her famous ride or not, she was a strong woman whose charitable legacy endured even amidst the turmoil of the Norman, French invasion.

A Belgian chocolate maker capitalized on the fame of the name “Godiva” and applied it to one of his products, exactly 200 years ago. The factory has expanded since then, and its products are now manufactured in several countries, including Turkey, where the owner of a local factory subsequently acquired full ownership of the Godiva company.
