Iraqi Prime Minister: We will not allow our territory to be used as a launching pad for attacks on neighboring countries

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Allawi affirmed that his country will not allow its territory or airspace to be used as a launching point for any aggression against neighboring states, emphasizing that Iraq’s role is to enhance regional security and stability, according to a statement issued by his media office.

Speaking during a visit to the operations center of the Air Defense Command, al-Allawi stated that the air defense system represents “the shield of Iraq’s skies and the first line of defense for its sovereignty,” reiterating that Iraq will not permit violations of its airspace or threats to its security from any party.

The Iraqi prime minister noted that building a capable armed forces constitutes a fundamental pillar in consolidating Iraq’s sovereignty and strengthening its ability to make political and military decisions independently.

In his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, al-Allawi directed that all requirements and needs of the air defense be met, and that efforts be made to elevate its combat and technological capabilities, providing the necessary resources to develop an advanced defensive system capable of protecting Iraqi airspace.

The prime minister’s visit to the Air Defense Command’s operations center aimed to assess firsthand the readiness, preparedness, and missions of the defensive system in safeguarding Iraqi airspace, the statement said.

The Iraqi prime minister also listened to a briefing by the Air Defense Commander on the current state of the system and plans to enhance its capabilities between 2026 and 2031, which include strengthening radar surveillance and detection capacities, as well as developing weapons systems and command and control infrastructure.
