Brunei Ambassador: Kuwait is a pivotal partner for ASEAN
The Ambassador of the Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam to Kuwait, Haji Suleiman Haji Said, praised Kuwait’s role in supporting cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), expressing hope to build on the momentum achieved during previous summits and to enhance collaboration in upcoming engagements, thereby advancing bilateral relations to broader horizons. This statement was made during the celebration of ASEAN’s 59th anniversary.
Said noted that ASEAN represents a regional community founded on friendship, trust, and cooperation, emphasizing that the Association continues to reaffirm its commitment to achieving regional peace and prosperity, and strengthening cooperation among its member states and partners based on mutual respect and adherence to international law. He pointed out that ASEAN, established in 1967, has evolved into a community comprising 11 countries and a population of over 680 million people, working collectively to build a more inclusive, resilient, and people-centered region.
He added that ASEAN has successfully expanded its partnerships beyond Southeast Asia, underscoring the importance of cooperation with international partners in addressing shared challenges and enhancing opportunities for development and prosperity. He noted that 2023 marked a significant milestone in ASEAN-Kuwait relations, with the holding of the first summit between the two sides, which opened a new chapter in their relationship and joint cooperation.
He clarified that the second summit between ASEAN and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries adopted the “ASEAN 2035” cooperation framework, reflecting a collective commitment to deepening partnerships in several vital areas, including trade, investment, energy security, food security, digital transformation, tourism, education, and climate action. He also welcomed Kuwait’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, considering this step a reflection of Kuwait’s commitment to the principles of peaceful cooperation and respect for international law, and affirming the depth of relations between Kuwait and the countries of the region.
On strengthening relations, he noted that ASEAN embassies accredited to Kuwait are working closely through the Association’s committee, not only to enhance bilateral ties with Kuwait but also to promote the cultures of Southeast Asian countries and foster understanding and communication between the peoples of the region and Kuwaiti society. He explained that these efforts include organizing various cultural, social, and humanitarian activities, alongside environmental and community initiatives, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and solidarity that characterizes ASEAN.
He expressed his appreciation for the Kuwaiti government for providing a welcoming, hospitable, and secure environment for ASEAN nationals residing in Kuwait, especially given the circumstances and challenges facing the region. He noted that Kuwait enjoys an open society and a culture based on coexistence.
On the occasion, the Bruneian ambassador affirmed that celebrating the Association’s anniversary represents an opportunity to renew commitment to its principles and objectives, stressing that ASEAN is not merely a regional organization, but a community founded on friendship, trust, and cooperation, aiming to strengthen bonds of closeness among its member states and partners.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of continuing joint efforts to achieve a more prosperous and stable future for the peoples of the region, and to enhance partnerships between ASEAN countries, Kuwait, and the Gulf Cooperation Council states.
