Syria announces self-sufficiency in wheat for the first time in years

Syria has announced that it has achieved self-sufficiency in wheat production for the first time in years, after having been forced in recent years to import most of its wheat requirements due to the conditions of war and drought. The Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted Ahmad Qadoun, deputy director general of the Syrian Grain Corporation, as saying that the total quantity of wheat received from various governorates reached 2.7 million tons by Wednesday. He added that this volume exceeded Syria’s annual estimated need of approximately 2.55 million tons, thereby achieving self-sufficiency in wheat production. Qadoun clarified that the process of receiving wheat from farmers is still ongoing, and no final deadline will be set for closing reception centers as long as viable quantities continue to be delivered.
