Abdulrahman Al-Siddiq: Will He Become the First Muslim Senator in Congressional History?

In one of the fiercest Democratic primary races, a progressive candidate from the far left managed to defeat his opponent after a grueling and chaotic campaign. Abdul Siddiq (Abdulrahman Siddiq) secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate race in Michigan, defeating Representative Haley Stevens despite an unprecedented spending surge led by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its allies in support of his rival, a result that represents a major victory for the progressive wing of the party in one of the most competitive states nationally.

Siddiq now prepares for a decisive general election in November against Republican candidate Mike Rogers, the former congressman backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who secured his party’s nomination with little notable opposition. The race is viewed as a pivotal battle that could determine the future majority in the Senate. Siddiq, an epidemiologist and former health director of Wayne County who ran as an independent in Michigan’s 2018 gubernatorial election without success, would become the first Muslim member of the U.S. Senate if elected. He has made universal healthcare a cornerstone of his campaign. He has also called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and was one of the harshest critics of the Zionist occupation during the Gaza war, describing the occupation’s actions as “genocide.”

Massive spending, the Democratic establishment, and attacks on Siddiq’s social democratic leanings dominated the primary, leaving the last man standing on the left bruised and battered as he prepares to face Rogers. More than $80 million was spent on the primary, making it the most expensive Democratic Senate nomination contest in history. A significant portion of the funds came from outside groups supporting Stevens or opposing Siddiq. The largest spender was the United Democracy Project, a political action committee affiliated with AIPAC.

Commenting on Siddiq’s victory, President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Siddiq’s win is “great news” for the Republican Party, because the progressive candidate is a “loser communist.” Trump stated: “Great news for the Republican Party. Siddiq, the communist loser who hates Jews and Israel, is the expected winner in his race with the socialist.” He added, “As usual, the polls were completely wrong this time. His brilliant success was not expected. And now, the Democrats’ crazy policies will get even worse!”
