In the context of the state’s plan to support health development through global partnerships, Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadi held discussions with a delegation from the US Mayo Clinic on ways to enhance joint cooperation in medical education, professional development, and healthcare.
Minister Al-Awadi emphasized the ministry’s commitment to continuing to strengthen ties with leading international health institutions and leveraging these partnerships to support the ministry’s priorities in developing national competencies, expanding opportunities for continuous education and professional development, improving the quality of healthcare services, and utilizing global expertise to enhance healthcare quality across various specialties.
The two sides discussed areas of joint cooperation, foremost among which is providing opportunities for medical staff in the Ministry of Health to participate in a series of educational lectures. This is part of the existing cooperation with Mayo Clinic, enabling the utilization of an international scientific program featuring a select group of experts and specialists, thereby enhancing knowledge and experience exchange with Ministry of Health physicians in Kuwait.
In this context, the Ministry of Health launched yesterday a platform for training health cadres in collaboration with the US Mayo Clinic, through a series of lectures delivered by experts and specialists from the hospital. The platform will present the latest developments shaping the future of medicine on August 18.
For his part, Dr. Omar Ghanem, Medical Director of Mayo Clinic in the Middle East, said, “We have launched, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, a series of lectures that allow physicians in Kuwait to benefit from the medical expertise and information provided by a select group of specialists at Mayo Clinic.”
He added that Mayo Clinic is not limited to the clinical aspect alone but extends to research as well, noting that it has 22 main research laboratories and spends approximately $1.3 billion annually on research, an investment reflecting the significant interest in this field. He affirmed the provision of support to enhance the expertise of physicians in Kuwait.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Health, Minister Al-Awadi emphasized the ministry’s commitment to continuing to strengthen cooperation with leading international health institutions and leveraging these partnerships to support the ministry’s priorities in developing national competencies, expanding opportunities for continuous education and professional development, improving the quality of healthcare services, and utilizing global expertise to enhance healthcare quality across various specialties.
The statement added that the two sides discussed areas of joint cooperation, foremost among which is providing opportunities for medical staff in the Ministry of Health to participate in a series of educational lectures as part of the existing cooperation with Mayo Clinic. This enables the utilization of an international scientific program featuring a select group of experts and specialists, enhancing knowledge and experience exchange with Ministry of Health physicians in Kuwait.
It clarified that this initiative is an extension of the efforts of the External Health Services Sector to utilize its institutional relations and international partnerships, transforming them into practical initiatives that contribute to developing national capacities by providing high-quality educational and training opportunities.
The statement noted that the Mayo Clinic delegation expressed appreciation for the efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Health in developing Kuwait’s health system.
Attending the meeting were Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health Sheikh Dr. Salman Khalifa Al-Sabah, Assistant Undersecretary for External Health Services Dr. Hisham Kalander, Executive Director for the Americas at Mayo Clinic International Jose Padilla, and Dr. Omar Ghanem, Medical Director of Mayo Clinic in the Middle East.
Training Platform
The Ministry of Health launched yesterday (Wednesday) a platform for training health cadres in collaboration with the US Mayo Clinic, through a series of lectures delivered by experts and specialists from the hospital, presenting the latest developments shaping the future of medicine on August 18.
In a statement to KUNA, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health Sheikh Dr. Salman Khalifa Al-Sabah said that the cooperation between the ministry and Mayo Clinic represents an important opportunity for collaboration in several fields to gain medical expertise and benefit from it.
Sheikh Dr. Salman Al-Sabah added that what distinguishes Mayo Clinic is not only its clinical aspects but also its management and policy-making dimensions, making it one of the most important hospitals worldwide.
He affirmed that Kuwait possesses the necessary infrastructure to achieve future goals for sustainable healthcare, which reflects the volume of opportunities that can be made available, looking forward to Mayo Clinic’s contribution in this regard.
For his part, Assistant Undersecretary for External Health Services at the Ministry, Dr. Hisham Kalander, said in a similar statement to KUNA that the platform aims to transfer expertise between the ministry and the hospital and share the latest health practices that will reflect positively on the level of service and the quality of care provided to citizens and residents alike.
Dr. Kalander added that the launch of the platform marks the beginning of a series of other projects, consisting of a set of lectures continuing for more than a year on a monthly basis with various topics aimed at developing the health system.
He emphasized that the Ministry of Health attaches great importance to supporting and developing health cadres in the State of Kuwait by providing necessary healthcare services to enhance the quality of care provided.
Mayo Clinic’s Medical Director: We Spend $1.3 Billion Annually on Research… and Will Support Kuwaiti Physicians’ Expertise
Dr. Omar Ghanem, Medical Director of Mayo Clinic in the Middle East, said in a similar statement to KUNA, “We have launched, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Kuwait, a series of lectures that allow physicians in Kuwait to benefit from the medical expertise and information provided by a select group of specialists at Mayo Clinic.”
Dr. Ghanem added that Mayo Clinic is not limited to the clinical aspect alone but extends to research as well, noting that it has 22 main research laboratories and spends approximately $1.3 billion annually on research, an investment reflecting the significant interest in this field.
He clarified that Mayo Clinic owns five colleges: the College of Medicine, the College of Graduate Medical Education, the College of Continuing Professional Development, as well as the Colleges of Health Sciences and Biomedical Sciences, along with 450 educational programs.
