The film 'The Odyssey' boosts tourism in Sicily by half a billion dollars

Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey” has transformed from a cinematic success into a new economic engine for the Italian island of Sicily, as the island of Favignana, which was used to portray Ithaca, the homeland of Odysseus in the film, experiences a growing wave of tourist interest. Estimates suggest the project could generate over $500 million in tourism revenue in the long term.
The American magazine Variety reported that Favignana, the largest of the Egadi Islands off the western coast of Sicily, has become the focal point of tourism promotion campaigns since the film’s trailer was released last May. Booking platforms, including Airbnb, have begun promoting stays on the island as a gateway for visitors to explore the locations that inspired the film’s atmosphere.
The magazine quoted Nicola Tarantino, head of the Sicily Film Commission, who predicted a significant rise in international tourist numbers, particularly from the United States. He noted that the expected impact is expected to surpass that of the series “The White Lotus” when it filmed its second season in Taormina in 2022.
“The Odyssey” is the largest cinematic production in Christopher Nolan’s career in terms of budget, with costs reaching approximately $250 million. It was filmed in seven countries, including Italy, Greece, Morocco, the United Kingdom, and Iceland, in an effort to retell Homer’s epic by relying on real natural locations rather than studios. Nolan stated that this approach gives the film visual authenticity and strengthens the audience’s connection to historical places.
Nolan chose to film several of the film’s most prominent scenes at the 15th-century Santa Caterina Castle, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea from the summit of Mount Santa Caterina, to depict the palace of Ithaca. Other scenes were shot in the bays and beaches of Favignana and the neighboring island of Levanzo, while the pig farm and the shepherd Eumaeus’s house were built specifically to serve the film’s narrative.
Local officials believe that Nolan’s choice of real filming locations, rather than relying on studios or digital environments, has given the island an exceptional global presence and brought renewed attention to its natural and cultural heritage. Tarantino emphasized that Sicily has become a true protagonist in the film, and that Nolan’s vision will introduce these locations to the imagination of millions of viewers worldwide, thereby enhancing their tourism and cultural value.
Estimates published by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica indicate that film-related tourism could generate around $287 million over the next three years in Favignana alone, before exceeding $500 million in the long term. This compares to revenues of approximately $158 million generated for the city of Taormina by the series “The White Lotus” since its premiere.
