Experts warn against the excessive softness of sleeping pillows

A soft pillow may seem like the ideal choice when shopping, but sleep experts emphasize that comfort does not necessarily mean the pillow will provide the support your neck needs after a full night’s sleep. Studies indicate that many people tend to choose pillows that are too soft, which can lead to inadequate support for the head and neck, resulting in morning pain or stiffness. Alan Foo, a lecturer at the University of Sydney and a physiotherapist, explains that most people judge a pillow during the first few minutes of use, whereas its true performance becomes apparent only after hours of sleep, when it compresses under the weight of the head. A previous study also showed that users of down-filled pillows, which are typically softer, rated their sleep quality and pillow comfort lower than those who used firmer pillows, such as latex or memory foam. Experts stress that the primary function of a pillow is to maintain the alignment of the neck and spine during sleep, not merely to provide a soft feel. Since the human head weighs an average of about 4.5 kilograms, the pillow gradually compresses throughout the night; therefore, testing it for a few seconds in a store is insufficient to evaluate it. Experts recommend lying on the pillow for several minutes before purchasing it and choosing a pillow that appears slightly higher or firmer, as it will soften with use. The filling material plays a crucial role in the level of support the pillow provides. Research indicates that pillows made of latex or memory foam are more effective at reducing neck pain because they maintain head support throughout the night.
