Kuwait Airways: Welcome Back to Leadership!

The decision to convert Kuwait Airways into a state-owned joint-stock company is a beacon of hope that the “Blue Bird” will reclaim its regional leadership and marks a step toward restoring our standing in an industry in which we can confidently claim to be among the founders in the Gulf region. On a personal level, anyone who knows me well is aware that Kuwait Airways in the 1990s was not merely the launchpad for my professional career, but the most significant and prominent chapter of my life, shaping me professionally. I was among the fortunate few who benefited from a work environment that was generations ahead of its time, not only locally but across the region.
Undoubtedly, discussing Kuwait Airways’ leadership since its inception, and how it was the premier and most prominent airline in the region, would require numerous articles. However, recalling the developments I witnessed during my tenure, which spanned more than a decade, the company’s history confirms that it was never merely a national carrier. At various stages, it was among the most advanced airlines in the region, adopting administrative and operational concepts that preceded those of regional competitors. We implemented sophisticated service quality measurement programs alongside a “mystery passenger” program, and established specialized teams for emergency response and crisis management. Kuwait Airways was also among the earliest state institutions to embrace digitalization in its operational and administrative processes at a very early stage.
The level Kuwait Airways reached in its later years caused pain to us as Kuwaitis, because we do not view it as just an airline, but as an icon of Kuwaiti pride. Its history has proven that it never lacked vision or competence; rather, in recent years, it suffered from ineffective management that failed to sustain its regional leadership. Therefore, the decision to convert Kuwait Airways into a fully state-owned joint-stock company signals a new phase in the management of one of the nation’s most important institutions, granting it greater flexibility in management, financing, and governance. This is especially crucial amid fierce Gulf competition, where regional airlines no longer compete merely on transporting passengers, but on the travel experience, speed of decision-making, operational efficiency, ability to attract investments, and profitability. Each carrier excels in different areas, and it is time for Kuwait Airways to reclaim its deserved position in Gulf competition. Thus, the shift to a state-owned joint-stock company appears a logical step, as it enables more professional management.
We hope the decision will help eliminate the dominance of bureaucracy over operational decisions, link positions to competence, performance, and discipline, and restore performance measurement and customer satisfaction programs. Kuwait Airways currently has a rare opportunity, particularly as this decision and transformation coincide with the modernization of its fleet. In the face of intense Gulf competition and a rapidly changing market, where Gulf airlines are investing billions of dollars in expansion, technology, and services, what Kuwait Airways needs most is decision-making flexibility. This flexibility has become a competitive advantage no less important than owning aircraft themselves.
With this corporate transformation, we must recognize that modern economies no longer measure institutional success by the size of government support they receive, but by their ability to compete, operational efficiency, and revenue sustainability. An institution competing in an open market cannot operate with a traditional management mindset. Ultimately, the key to the development of airlines lies in competing to offer passengers an exceptional and distinctive travel experience. Thirty years ago, airlines largely monopolized their markets. Today, passengers compare dozens of options with a single click, indifferent to whether the carrier is state-owned or private; what matters is the company that delivers the best service, on-time flights, competitive pricing, and worthy service.
