Deputy Foreign Minister Highlights Women's Empowerment: 122 Kuwaiti Women in the Public Prosecution and Judiciary

Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah, Assistant Minister for Human Rights Affairs and Chair of the National Committee for the Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, affirmed Kuwait’s continued efforts to consolidate its standing in promoting human rights and empowering women within the justice system, in line with the country’s constitution and its international commitments.

This statement was made during a lecture delivered by Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah on Tuesday at a scientific symposium organized by the Kuwait Institute for Judicial and Legal Studies, titled “UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security: International Commitments and National Applications – The Experience of the State of Kuwait.” The event was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Human Rights Affairs Department, and was moderated by Dr. Ahmad Al-Maqled, Advisor and Deputy Director of the Institute’s Communications, Relations, and Research Sector.

Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah stated that Kuwait has attached great importance to implementing the resolution by establishing a national committee chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate efforts among relevant entities, raise awareness, build capacity, and enhance institutional cooperation in accordance with international best practices. She noted that the symposium is part of the committee’s efforts to disseminate awareness of the resolution’s objectives and strengthen national capacity-building initiatives supporting its implementation.

In this regard, Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah told KUNA after the symposium that UN Security Council Resolution 1325, adopted in 2000, marked a qualitative shift in recognizing the pivotal role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and protection during armed conflicts.

She added that Kuwait has made progress in empowering women within the justice system, with 122 female members of the Public Prosecution and female judges (accounting for 8 percent of the total), alongside the appointment of the first female Deputy Minister of Justice and the presence of 27 Kuwaiti women as secretaries of court sessions.

She expressed her hope that Kuwaiti female judges will attain senior positions in international courts, emphasizing that women’s empowerment in the justice sector constitutes a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development and enhancing security and peace.

The symposium, held at the Institute’s headquarters, was attended by a number of specialists and stakeholders focused on raising awareness of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and showcasing Kuwait’s experience in implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
