Minister of Health issues a decision to establish the title “Midwifery” among the auxiliary professions to the medical profession

Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadi issued a ministerial decision today, Monday, creating the title “midwife” among the professions assisting the medical profession, in a move aimed at keeping pace with the development of maternal and child health services and enhancing the quality of healthcare in the State of Kuwait.

The Ministry of Health stated in a press release that the introduction of this title underscores the pivotal role played by the midwifery profession in ensuring safe childbirth and providing a positive experience for mothers and families, supporting qualified personnel, and promoting evidence-based professional practices, all of which contribute to the safety of mothers and newborns and the quality of healthcare.

It added that the decision aligns with the expansion of women’s, childbirth, maternal, and child health services, coinciding with the opening and operation of new health projects, foremost among them the new maternity hospital in the Al-Sabah Medical Complex, as well as the expansion of maternal and child health services in Adan, Farwaniya, and Jahra hospitals, in line with best global practices and standards.

The ministry clarified that the decision is based on the provisions of Law No. 70 of 2020 concerning the practice of the medical profession and its assisting professions, as well as patients’ rights and health facilities. Article 3 of the law authorizes the Minister of Health to add assisting professions to the medical profession, in accordance with the evolution of health services and the needs of the healthcare system.
