In a deeply moving human scene, a photograph of a young boy crying beside his injured mother following a horrific bus accident in Syria sparked a wave of sympathy on social media platforms, as the image became one of the most widely shared in the aftermath of the tragedy that left dozens dead and injured. The image of the boy stirred the emotions of followers across social media, becoming one of the most circulated visuals amid a broad outpouring of empathy and questions about the fate of the child and his mother. Thirty-five people were killed and 30 others injured on Saturday following a collision between two passenger buses in the areas of Al-Sukhnah and Tadmur on the Damascus-Deir ez-Zor road in the Syrian countryside, according to an initial tally announced by the Syrian Ministry of Health. Among the dozens of victims and the injured, the image of the boy standing beside his injured mother captured public attention, embodying a human dimension of the tragedy and igniting widespread interaction on social media platforms. Speaking about the details of the accident, the boy’s mother, Mohammed Amer Al-Ahmad, a survivor of the collision, said she witnessed the moment the two buses collided and attempted to escape by jumping out of a window in the bus, but she suffered a blow to the head that caused her to lose consciousness. She added, “When I regained consciousness, I found my son trying to wake me up.” They were then transported by ambulance teams to Tadmur Hospital, and subsequently to the National Hospital in Deir ez-Zor for treatment. She confirmed that her condition is stable and that her child sustained multiple injuries, primarily to the head. For his part, Dr. Mohammed Darwish stated that the National Hospital in Deir ez-Zor admitted 12 patients from the accident, including the boy Mohammed, noting that he suffers from a skull fracture and is under medical observation for 24 hours. He added that the child had undergone a cardiac catheterization procedure in Damascus prior to the accident, and confirmed that his condition is stable. The confirmation of the survival of the child and his mother triggered a broad wave of relief on social media, after his image, standing crying beside his injured mother, had evoked deep sadness and sympathy, with many believing she had passed away.
