The Egyptian Public Prosecution ordered the detention of an Egyptian national pending investigation, on charges of stealing and dismantling a car belonging to the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser. The Egyptian Ministry of Interior issued a statement to clarify details regarding recent reports that an individual had stolen a former president’s vehicle and attempted to cut it up to sell as scrap in Alexandria Governorate. The ministry stated: “It emerged that on the 19th of this month, the Attarin Police Station in Alexandria received a report that some residents had apprehended an individual while he was entering his father’s warehouse and attempting to steal two vintage private cars from the old collection.” The ministry added that one of the two cars had been purchased by the suspect’s father at a public auction in 1981, and its license plates were surrendered to the Traffic Department in 1995 to relinquish its registration status. It clarified that both cars were stored in the aforementioned warehouse, and that the suspect attempted to cut metal parts from them using a torch, a saw, and screwdrivers, in order to sell the parts to scrap dealers. The ministry noted that the suspect was apprehended with the tools used in the attempted crime, legal procedures were initiated at the time, and the Public Prosecution took over the investigation, ordering his detention pending further inquiries.
