Yogurt: A Strong Ally for Heart Health

Reem Qasim - In addition to its calcium and protein content, yogurt may offer cardiovascular benefits, according to a recent study conducted in France that highlighted the role of gut bacteria in these benefits. Results, as reported by Passport Santé, indicate that regular consumption of fermented yogurt may reduce the risk of stroke, underscoring the importance of lactic acid bacteria in this process. This discovery opens new avenues for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

The study included more than 104,000 adults, followed for an average of 5.5 years, to explore the relationship between dairy product consumption and cardiovascular health. It was conducted by researchers at Inserm and the French National Institute for Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Research. The results showed that dairy products in general were not associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, fermented dairy products, particularly yogurt, demonstrated a positive effect and were linked to a lower risk of these conditions.

Data indicate that consuming more than 160 grams of yogurt daily, or approximately two servings, is associated with a 19% lower risk of stroke compared to consuming less than 57 grams daily. The protective effect remains notable even with just two servings per week, as part of a balanced diet, in relation to heart attacks and strokes.

Gut Microbiota and Beyond

Alongside traditional compounds, the live ingredients in yogurt, specifically well-known lactic acid bacteria, are attracting growing attention. Their influence extends beyond the digestive system; researchers believe these microorganisms significantly modify the composition and function of gut microbiota, which is now considered a true "organ" playing a pivotal role in immune and metabolic balance. Consequently, yogurt’s impact on heart health may be linked to its effect on an unexpected organ: the intestines. Scientific evidence is increasingly highlighting the gut’s role in influencing various bodily functions and systems.

Potential mechanisms for this effect include:

• Stimulating intestinal and systemic immunity.

• Increasing the production of short-chain fatty acids, which help regulate systemic inflammation.

• Having a positive impact on body weight, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and blood lipid levels.

What is the Optimal Amount of Yogurt to Consume?

Current research highlights associations but does not provide a precise assessment of potential benefits. Furthermore, the appropriate amount may vary depending on individual characteristics, particularly in cases of lactose intolerance, allergies, or specific medical conditions. Regarding product selection, choosing plain yogurt rich in lactic acid bacteria and free from excessive additives (such as sugar and artificial flavors) is a better option for supporting metabolic, cardiovascular, and vascular health.
