Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences: $3 million to enable solar energy services in Lebanon
The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a grant agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today (Tuesday) worth three million US dollars to help finance a project aimed at enabling public services through solar energy in the Lebanese Republic. The agreement was signed by Rashid Al-Badr, Acting Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, and Emma Morley, UNDP Resident Representative in Kuwait.
Al-Badr told KUNA that the project aims to enhance the sustainability and reliability of electricity supplies in several priority public institutions in Lebanon by installing photovoltaic solar energy systems and improving energy efficiency. He added that the project contributes to reducing reliance on diesel generators, lowering operational costs, and improving the continuity of essential public services, while also helping to cut emissions from the use of traditional energy sources and promoting the sustainable use of energy.
He clarified that the project includes implementing a set of key components, such as installing photovoltaic solar energy systems in beneficiary institutions and carrying out measures to improve energy efficiency, along with providing related equipment and fixtures.
Al-Badr noted that the project also includes building the technical capacities of staff and relevant entities in the operation, maintenance, and sustainable management of energy systems, as well as strengthening operational and maintenance arrangements to ensure the sustained functioning of the systems and maximize the benefits derived from the project’s outputs.
He emphasized that this grant comes within the framework of the Kuwait Fund’s commitment to supporting sustainable development efforts in Arab countries and contributing to the implementation of development projects that enhance infrastructure and basic services, strengthen the capacity of public institutions to address development challenges, and contribute to achieving sustainable development and improving the level of services provided to beneficiary communities.
