De la Fuente: From Job Hunting to Global Glory
It may never have crossed the mind of the historic Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente, 65, that he would reach this day, crowned as World Cup champion at the expense of the defending titleholders, the Argentine national team, led by the legend Lionel Messi. De la Fuente is the architect of Spain’s glory, and he has a highly inspiring story of perseverance, seizing opportunities, and holding onto them, especially after the phrase “De la Fuente looking for a job” became associated with the coach’s narrative. In 2011, after being dismissed from his position as coach of Avés, he remained unemployed for 18 months until he found a job advertisement in a newspaper seeking a coach for Spain’s youth national teams. He applied for the position, was accepted, and began from there a journey that built Spain’s current golden generation, culminating in major achievements such as winning the UEFA European Championship, securing Spain’s second World Cup title in history, as well as capturing the UEFA Under-19 and Under-21 European titles, followed by the UEFA Nations League, thereby asserting his dominance over Europe and ascending to the pinnacle of world football.
Luis de la Fuente took charge of the senior Spanish national team in December 2022, succeeding coach Luis Enrique. His appointment was decided by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) based on a recommendation from then-sporting director José Francisco Molina, following a successful career spent coaching Spain’s youth national teams. The federation relied on De la Fuente to continue the successful project, given his deep knowledge and firsthand experience with many of the current national team stars—such as Rodri, Dani Olmo, Unai Simón, and Lamine Yamal—since their days in the youth setups.
Luis de la Fuente is fully confident in Spain’s ability to defeat any national team in the world. He emphasized after eliminating France in the semi-finals that his team is “the best in the world,” thanks to its commitment, talent, and cohesion among players.
