Study reveals stunning impact of chocolate scent on athletic performance

The secret to improving your performance in the gym may be closer than you think, and it might not even require taking any dietary supplements or even biting into a piece of chocolate. A recent study suggests that simply inhaling the scent of dark chocolate before and during exercise may help you perform a greater number of repetitions during strength training. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology and reported by Healthline, adds new evidence to research exploring the impact of scents on athletic performance.

Researchers found that healthy men who inhaled the scent of 90% dark chocolate were able to perform more repetitions of the leg extension exercise compared to those who inhaled the scent of water, which was used as a control substance in the experiment. Participants also reported feeling more satiated and experiencing reduced hunger. The scent of milk chocolate also improved performance, but to a lesser degree, and was associated with a different psychological response.

According to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, researchers believe the findings bolster growing evidence that scents can influence physical performance through complex interactions between the brain, appetite, and perception. Marie-Ève Mathieu, a researcher at Canada’s University of Montreal who was not involved in the study, said, “The results are consistent with previous research suggesting that reduced appetite and feelings of satiety may be linked to improved athletic performance.” She added that other studies have previously examined the effects of scents such as mint, ammonia, lavender, and citrus on physical performance, but emphasized the need to interpret the results with caution due to the study’s limitations.
