Strange fish with a transparent head and glowing eyes

Researchers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute in California, United States, have captured the first-ever footage of a rare barrelfish species in its natural habitat. These fish swim at depths of around 710 meters, where sunlight reaches only as a faint glow, creating a mysterious, aurora-like world unlike anything found closer to the surface. The strange creature, named “Ventrifossa telescopica,” was filmed using the remotely operated vehicle “Subastian” during a month-long expedition in the Doldrums region, one of the least-explored areas of the Atlantic Ocean. According to an official press release issued by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, these fish are renowned for their exceptionally transparent heads, which allow scientists to see their unusual eyes inside the skull. Scientists, as reported by Al Jazeera, say that the thin, transparent dome covering the fish’s head often collapses when specimens are brought to the surface by nets. As a result, most of what is known about them comes from damaged samples rather than live animals. They add that observing a live “Ventrifossa telescopica” provides experts with a rare opportunity to study its behavior in its natural environment. Most barrelfish live at depths ranging from 600 to 1,000 meters below the surface, in the mesopelagic zone, or “twilight zone,” where only a small fraction of sunlight penetrates.
