South African player Gaiden Adams dies days after participating in the World Cup

South Africa national team and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Gaiden Adams has died at the age of 25, just days after representing his country at the World Cup. Adams played in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches, as the team advanced to the knockout rounds before being eliminated by Canada in the Round of 32. South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gaeton McKenzie, said in a statement: “With deep sorrow and grief, I received the news of Gaiden Adams’ passing.” South African police announced that an investigation has been opened after the body of the 25-year-old player was found at his home in the Schoutensiek area, a suburb in the center of Cape Town. Reports indicate that three of Adams’ brothers and five close friends were arrested by South African police and are being held for questioning regarding the player’s death. Police documents suggest that the player was threatened by a group of individuals after South Africa was eliminated from the tournament.
