The National Bank of Kuwait has raised awareness about emerging fraud risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and the importance of exercising caution when conducting transactions, in light of an environment marked by increasing reliance on digital technologies. This effort is part of the bank’s ongoing support for the “Let’s Be Aware” campaign, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Kuwait and the Kuwait Banks Association.
The National Bank of Kuwait highlighted that while AI offers numerous benefits across various sectors, hackers are increasingly exploiting advanced technologies to carry out fraud schemes designed to deceive individuals and obtain personal, financial, or banking information. Noting that fraud techniques continue to evolve, the bank emphasized that awareness and verification remain critical tools in protecting customers from financial crimes.
The bank warned customers about the growing prevalence of voice phishing scams using deepfake technology, where fraudsters use AI to create realistic audio recordings that mimic family members, colleagues, public figures, or representatives of trusted organizations. These scams are often designed to create a sense of urgency and persuade individuals to share sensitive information or transfer funds without proper verification.
The National Bank of Kuwait also drew attention to the rise in AI-generated phishing messages, which have become increasingly sophisticated and difficult to distinguish from legitimate communications. Fraudulent emails, text messages, and online messages can appear highly convincing, using professional language and realistic branding to encourage recipients to click on attached links or disclose sensitive information.
Furthermore, the bank cautioned against interacting with fake customer service channels on social media platforms, messaging apps, or untrusted websites. Fraudsters may impersonate banks, government entities, or well-known organizations, requesting personal information, passwords, one-time passwords, or account details under the guise of providing assistance or resolving an issue.
The National Bank of Kuwait affirmed that customers should never rely solely on the appearance of a message, phone call, or online interaction to determine its legitimacy. Instead, individuals should independently verify any request involving financial information, account access, payments, or personal data by contacting the organization directly through its official channels.
The bank encouraged customers to remain vigilant when faced with urgent requests, unexpected communications, or offers that seem too good to be true, stressing that taking a few moments to verify information before responding can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to fraud.
The bank noted that cybersecurity awareness must continue to evolve alongside technological advancements. While AI may enhance the complexity of fraudulent schemes, maintaining strong security practices, exercising caution, and verifying information through reliable sources remain effective defenses against financial fraud.
Through its participation in the “Let’s Be Aware” campaign, the National Bank of Kuwait is committed to strengthening financial literacy and cybersecurity awareness by equipping customers with the knowledge and tools needed to identify emerging threats and protect their personal and financial information.
