The Court of Appeal’s State Security Division, presided over by Advisor Abdullah Al-Sanea and with Advisors Mohammed Jafar and Hamad Al-Badr as members, issued several rulings in State Security cases. It sentenced an Egyptian defendant, a member of the Daesh (ISIS) group who had received training in the use of explosives and improvised explosive devices to harm the country’s national interests and to plan bombings of Hussainiyas in Kuwait, as well as to publicly insult and disparage the Amir, to five years’ imprisonment. The court also sentenced a Kuwaiti national to five years’ imprisonment for publicly insulting and disparaging the Amir’s rights, inciting the overthrow of the system of government, and showing contempt for Shia citizens and stirring sectarian strife in the country through writings on social media platforms; he was referred for psychiatric evaluation, and his responsibility for his actions was established. The court upheld the acquittal of a lawyer charged with inciting sectarian strife and showing contempt for followers of the Shia sect in Kuwait, while overturning the acquittal of a citizen accused of expressing sympathy during Iran’s despicable attacks on Kuwait, and ordered that his sentencing be deferred on bail.
